Therapeutic Techniques

You are an individual!

Every time someone comes to me I assess their needs and create a therapeutic programme to solve whatever the problem is that has brought them to me. To do that use a range of powerful tools:

Hypnotherapy

Hypnosis is a completely natural state of mind, comparable to daydreaming. It is induced by focusing the mind on a single idea or concept.

Contrary to what we’re led to believe by stage hypnotists, generally you do not feel hypnotised and you certainly will not lose awareness or control, in fact quite often people report a feeling of heightened awareness and a feeling of deep calm and relaxation.

Using hypnosis combined alongside behavioural and cognitive therapies helps the individual gain fresh attitudes and new ways of thinking about things. This is achieved by bypassing the conscious mind which can reject new ideas even if they are ideas that will help! The subconscious mind - which we can reach using hypnotherapy - will accept new ideas more readily particularly if they are beneficial. In effect you have the opportunity to reassess any faulty ‘programming’ that you may have received in the past and create a new more positive approach.

By changing negative thought patterns, behaviour and feelings at a subconscious level you can regain the control that has been lost through our reaction to life’s difficulties.

CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)

CBT works with our 'cognitive processes', our thoughts which include our ideas, mental images, beliefs and attitudes. Cognitive therapy is based on the principle that certain ways of thinking can trigger, or 'fuel', our belief systems, particularly negative automatic thoughts.

Cognitive work can help identify any harmful, unhelpful, and 'false' ideas or thoughts that can convince you that you can’t achieve your goals. The aim is then to change your ways of thinking to avoid these ideas thereby helping your thought patterns to be more realistic and positive and help change any behaviours that are harmful or not helpful.

SFBT

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is a short-term therapy that works by focussing on solutions rather than on problems. Instead of analysing your past and dwelling on what went wrong, SFBT will help you look towards the future, find direction and move forward.

In SFBT the desired outcome is to help you identify what positive changes you can make in your life that will help you realise your goals with confidence.  SFBT aims to help you change – by enabling you to recognise and engage with the process that makes change happen, rather than dwelling on potential problems, when they’re going to happen and what causes them.

During SFBT you will learn to draw on your existing strengths and resources, as a way of helping you action any necessary changes in your life. The most important first step in SFBT is to define how you want things to be different and to understand what you need to do to make change happen. By clearly defining your goals and visualising your life once you achieve those goals, you create a positive and viable outcome to focus on, and a stronger motivation to move towards a life with those changes made.

During SFBT you will learn to draw on your existing strengths and resources, as a way of helping you action any necessary changes in your life.

SFBT has been shown to be particularly effective for those who do not wish to relive past events or scenarios that they feel have caused their current suffering.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is developed by paying attention, on purpose, in a non-judgemental way, to what is going on in your body, your mind and in the world around you. In the Buddhist tradition this is known as moment-to-moment awareness – living in the present – rather than focussing on the past or the future.

“The present is the only time that any of us have to be alive – to know anything – to perceive – to learn – to act – to change – to heal” Jon Kabat-Zinn, Full Catastrophe Living.

Staying in touch with the present in this way, living from one moment to the next involves a shift in perspective and as such often leads to people feeling they have more control, choices, strength and confidence, more wisdom… more possibilities.

Being mindful will guide you towards more self-awareness and an ability to appreciate and get the most out of life.

Overall learning the process of Mindfulness may not make life’s difficulties disappear but it enables the practitioner to approach these difficulties with more strength, wisdom and passion for life.

NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) is a set of insights and practical skills with which you can actively use your mind and your emotions and your body to take control of your life and be more effective. It is a system that uses a huge range of mental techniques that can enable you to improve how you think, behave and feel. It can teach you skills and attitudes to help you do what you would like to be able to do, assist you to think more clearly, communicate more effectively and manage your thoughts, moods and behaviours.

The benefits of the support in project planning/goal setting are to ensure you have a structured programme with milestones to navigate your journey by and to enable you to physically see you progress, which will in turn generate enthusiasm and motivation to see you through to the next milestone
